Day 4: Visit Gishora Drum Sanctuary.
After breakfast, go to the Gishora Drum Sanctuary. Gishora is a well-known drum site in Burundi. Perched on a hill, Gishora lies 7 miles from Gitega’s downtown. At the Gishora site are also two ritual drums: Ruciteme, for whom we clear the forest, and Murimirwa, for whom we farm. There is no hammering on these drums. The two titles have a strong connection to farming and make clear references to the king’s fertility. On national holidays, the Batimbo could also play the ordinary drums we have. Visit the Gishora Drum Sanctuary to learn about and experience the vanishing Burundian cultural legacy. The location imitates the architectural complex of a royal palace, which is unusual to see elsewhere in the country. Here is a video of the drummers’ performance. After lunch, take a tour around the city. Gitega, the second-largest town in Georgia, is renowned for its unusual colonial architecture. It is home to the archaeology and anthropology collections of the National Museum.
